Is the TIMELOOPER for me?
Before you buy, please make sure you are a solo guitarist willing to configure your songs and live sets using an on-screen menu on the device. Be open to MIDI. If you don't want to mess around with menus or MIDI, then perhaps the TIMELOOPER is not for you. Otherwise, you'll need some MIDI instruments or the Strymon Timeline*, and the TIMELOOPER will be a great fit for your looping adventures as well as for automation of your live sets.
Dawless sequencer
The TIMELOOPER does not require a computer and travels in your gear bag. The built-in sequencer works with your choice of internal or external MIDI clock and contains 8 tracks of chords, arpeggios or effects modulators per song section, in addition to synchronizing the Strymon Timeline's* looper if you own one. Songs are programmed directly on the device and performed using the 2 footswitches.
MIDI loops
The TIMELOOPER loops song sections to your MIDI instruments and effects. For instance, you may loop arpeggios to a monophonic synthesizer and chords to a polyphonic synth while also looping effect modulations. You can setup your song to automatically move from one section to the next after a number of loop repetitions, or to move to the next section upon hitting a footswitch.
Audio loops on the Timeline
The TIMELOOPER synchronizes the audio loops on your Strymon Timeline*, if you own one. Recording and overdubs on your Timeline looper are automatically punched-in and played back in synch with your song. No need to hit a footswitch with perfect timing, your audio loop won't drift away. In addition, this aligns with the MIDI loops to modulate effects on your Timeline. If you don't own a Timeline, no worries, you can still use the TIMELOOPER with your MIDI instruments.
Songs are arranged as loop sections with chord progressions played as chords and arpeggios, including modulation of continuous control values. Improvise synchronized loops on your Strymon Timeline* and line up your songs for live performance.
Songs
The TIMELOOPER includes a song composition workflow based on song sections, which are MIDI loops of chords and arpeggios. As a guitarist, you play the melodic lines, for instance, and create additional loops on the Strymon Timeline*, if you own one. As you perform a song, your hands are free to play guitar. The TIMELOOPER can turn knobs for you, using effect modulator loops. Songs provide rhythmic and textural landscapes to your performance.
Chord progressions
The TIMELOOPER includes a workflow to define and select chord progressions for use in your songs. Each song section has its own progression, based on one of 12 scales**. Chords and arpeggios in song sections are played according to the chord progression. Whether you know music theory or not, you can quickly generate new ideas while composing or arranging your songs.
Live Sets
The TIMELOOPER includes a live performance workflow where you can organize your songs as set lists for your gigs. Configure each live set, song and song section to automate settings on your MIDI gear, such that you your hands are free on stage. You'll still have to turn knobs on your non-MIDI gear, and that's ok too, the TIMELOOPER will help you where it can.
Additional features
The TIMELOOPER includes a built-in MIDI clock and supports an external MIDI clock via a 5-pin MIDI IN port. Outputs are via a 5-pin MIDI OUT port (to instruments) as well as USB-C (to computer). Each song and song section can send CCs and program changes, a great time-saver for your live sets. A Micro SD card (included) stores all of you settings. The optional free application on Mac and Windows backs up and restores the settings. The TIMELOOPER powers up over your own USB-C power supply or via USB-C link to your computer.
Not included
Not included are the USB-C cable and adapter, as well as standard DIN-5 MIDI cables. USB-C is required to power the device and to perform firmware updates. At least one MIDI cable is required for MIDI OUT. An additional MIDI cable is required if you intend to use an external MIDI clock.
*The Strymon Timeline (or Timeline for short) is sold by Strymon and is not included with the TIMELOOPER 2F. HEXF8 is not affiliated in any way with Strymon.
